TSB : Hub Bearings: Installation

Details

With axle shaft in vise, install dust seal on axle shaft with seal flange facing outward. See Fig 1 . Install axle shaft. See AXLE SHAFTS . Remove all foreign material from knuckle bearing bore and hub bearing journal. If hub bearing journal is scored or damaged, replace hub assembly. Using bearing remover/installer kit, place knuckle (inboard of knuckle facing up) on appropriate spacer (step side down). See Fig 2 . NOTE: Bearing installers must be positioned as indicated to prevent bearing damage during installation. Install appropriate bearing installer on bearing outer race face, with undercut side of installer facing bearing. See Fig 2 . Press bearing in knuckle until it seats completely against knuckle bore shoulder. Install a new snap ring in knuckle groove. Ensure snap ring is properly seated. Position spacer, step side down, on face plate. Position hub on spacer. Position knuckle assembly on hub with outboard side of knuckle down. Position appropriate bearing remover, flat side down and centered, on bearing. See Fig 3 . Press remover until bearing is fully seated on hub. Ensure hub rotates freely on knuckle. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Lubricate CV joint splines with SAE 30W oil prior to installing in hub. During hub nut retainer installation, an audible click should be heard. Replace nut retainer if no click is heard or if any tabs are broken. Tighten nut retainer to specifications, and ensure one tab is positioned in axle shaft slot. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
