The bulletin and the letter are printed here as an added aid to the service technician. TURBOCHARGER/SUPERCHARGER INSTALLED ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH E40D TRANSMISSION The letter below was sent to all Ford Dealers, 4/24/90, indicating an incompatibility between the electronically controlled automatic transmission (E40D) and an Add-On Turbocharger/Supercharger. The purpose of this bulletin is to make intermediate and final stage manufacturer aware of the Ford Parts and Services (FPSD) dealer letter in the event of unusual and premature failures. Reprint of Letter to Dealers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To: All Ford Dealers Subject: Incompatibility of Add-On Turbocharger/Supercharger to E & F Series Trucks Equipped with Electronically Controlled (E40D) Automatic Transmissions The addition of a turbocharger/supercharger to E & F Series trucks equipped with the (E40D) is not electronically controlled automatic transmission compatible and will result in customer dissatisfaction. The shift scheduling of the E40D transmission is not calibrated for use with a turbocharger/supercharger package. Customers will experience shift performance concerns as well as damage to internal transmission components. Due to the incompatibility of an added turbocharger/supercharger and electronically controlled automatic transmission (E40D), we strongly recommend that you not sell or install a turbocharger/supercharger package on the subject units. Our position is based on engineering tests and actual experience. The intent of our position is to help maintain customer satisfaction with our product. This letter does not in any way suggest or imply that use of an add-on turbocharger/supercharger is acceptable or condoned for use on any Ford light trucks. Use of such products is likely to cause excessive stress, load, and temperature levels on all powertrain components. Prior to performing a repair to a vehicle with an add-on turbocharger or supercharger, you should be sure that the need for repair is caused by a true defect in a Ford part and not the result of a modification-generated condition. Excessive component stress, load, or temperature created by turbocharging/supercharging can cause unusual and premature part failures that, if they should occur, are not covered under the Ford warranty. Sincerely, Ford Motor Company ----------------------------------------------------------------------
