PURPOSE This bulletin has repair procedures to correct a body vibration which may be evident on 1999 2WD Montero Sport 3.5 L produced before July 16, 1998. BACKGROUND INFORMATION SYMPTOM The body vibration can occur after the vehicle stops, the gear selector in D-range, and the brake pedal still depressed. The vibration is primarily felt in the seats and steering wheel. CAUSE The stopper on the front side of the front engine mount may interfere with the engine mount insulator because the clearance between the two is insufficient. Because of this interference, engine vibration is transmitted directly to the body structure of the vehicle resulting in an abnormal and unusual vibration. REMEDY Following the procedures in this bulletin, widen the clearance between the front side engine stopper and insulator on BOTH front engine mounts. See Fig 1 . Dealer stock vehicles: Check for this condition on any affected vehicle during PDI and repair if necessary. Sold vehicles: Repair on a customer complaint basis. PROCEDURE Lift the vehicle or move it over a pit. Record the radio station presets, then remove the negative battery cable. Remove the under cover. See Fig 2 . Measure the clearance at the front side of the front engine mount between the engine mount stopper and insulator. Use a 3 mm gauge or a rod with a 3 mm diameter. See Fig 3 . Repeat this measurement for the engine mount on the other side of the vehicle. If either or both engine mounts have clearance below 3 mm, go to step 5. NOTE: The measurement of the clearance is only a guide. If you encounter a vehicle which has the vibration, yet the clearance measurement is at least 3 mm, proceed with the repair anyway, increasing the clearance to the indicated specification. See Fig 4 . WARNING: When repairing the passenger side engine mount, be careful not to damage the starter harness and the automatic transmission fluid lines which are located near the front of the engine mount. Insert a pry-bar between the insulator and stopper and pry on the stopper, bending it away from the insulator until the clearance is between 4 mm and 6 mm. See Fig 5 and Fig 6 . If you encounter difficulty doing this procedure on the vehicle, remove the engine mount, make the modification, then reinstall the mount. Reconnect the negative battery cable then restore the radio station presets. Test drive the vehicle to make sure the vibration is eliminated. If there is still a vibration, repeat procedures to increase the stopper to insulator clearance in steps 1 through 5. If the vibration is eliminated, go to step 7. Reinstall the under cover.
