The pump will continue to pump fuel to the fuel rail until approximately 0.3 gallon is left in the tank. Then the vehicle will stop due to lack of fuel. See Fig 1 . If only 1 gallon of fuel is added to the empty fuel tank, the vehicle will not start. At least 2 gallons of fuel are required in order for the fuel pump to prime properly for engine start-up.
