Clamp dial indicator in dial indicator holder and mount on the measuring plate. Position dial indicator on "0" on the measuring body (051b) part 01 under 3 mm preload. This adjusts the measuring body height (B1). Fig 7: Adjusting Measuring Body Height Courtesy of MERCEDES-BENZ OF NORTH AMERICA. Mount the tapered roller bearing outer race (46b) on the tapered roller inner race of the drive pinion (47) and attach magnetic disk (052c) part 03. Insert drive pinion (47) in the measuring plate and enter drive pinion height with tapered roller bearing and magnetic disk. Enter number 1 in the data sheet Read off the difference between the measuring body height (B1) and drive pinion height with magnetic disk (B) and enter in the data sheet under number 1 (e.g. 1.79 mm). Data sheet, gear set adjustment of rear axle: Order no. B20.800.98.113.00C Fig 8: Measuring Drive Pinion Height And Body Height Courtesy of MERCEDES-BENZ OF NORTH AMERICA. Enter number 2 in the measurement sheet Read off basic deviation "a" of the drive pinion (47) ("+" or "-") and enter under number 2 (z. B. +0,06) in the data sheet. Calculate subtotal in data sheet Add ("+") or subtract ("-") values from number 1 and 2, depending on the prefix ("+" or "-") of the value on the drive pinion (47). Fig 9: Identifying Drive Pinion Courtesy of MERCEDES-BENZ OF NORTH AMERICA. Insert measuring body (051b) part 01 of the measuring device (052) in the rear axle housing. Screw together measuring body (051b) with mounting piece part 02 and hexagon bolt. Fig 10: Inserting Measuring Body Courtesy of MERCEDES-BENZ OF NORTH AMERICA. Insert the left measuring device ring (052e) part 01 from the outside inwards precisely up to the stop in the rear axle housing. Insert the right measuring device ring (052d) part 02 from the inside outwards precisely up to the stop in the rear axle housing. Fig 11: Identifying Device Ring Parts 01 And 02 Courtesy of MERCEDES-BENZ OF NORTH AMERICA. Insert dial indicator (052a) with measuring pin into the measuring device (052). The measuring pin for the dial indicator (052a) is screwed into the adjusting piece (052b) Press the adjusting piece (052b) part 10 against the measuring device (052) and position dial indicator (052a) on "0" under 2 mm preload. Tighten clamp screw, checking the "0" position of the dial indicator (052a) and re-align if necessary. Fig 12: Identifying Measuring Device, Dial Indicator And Adjusting Piece Courtesy of MERCEDES-BENZ OF NORTH AMERICA. Insert the measuring device (052) into the rear axle housing though the left bore. When inserting the measuring device (052) into the rear axle housing ensure that the measuring pin of the dial indicator (052a) not damaged in the bore. Fig 13: Measuring Device Inserted Into The Rear Axle Housing Though The Left Bore Courtesy of MERCEDES-BENZ OF NORTH AMERICA. Enter number 3 in the data sheet Measure the difference (A1) between the adjusted gauge dimension and the end face of the measuring body and enter in the "positive" direction "+" or "negative direction" "-" under number 3 in the data sheet (e.g. -0.01 mm measured and therefore negative direction). The specification of the positive "+" or negative "-" direction is related to the direction of rotation of the pointer of the dial indicator (052a). The direction of rotation, starting from the zero position, means counterclockwise thus "negative" direction and clockwise for "positive" direction. Calculating the thickness of the shim "S" in the data sheet Add or subtract the subtotal of the values from number 1 and number 2, as well as the value from number 3. The calculated value equals the thickness of the shim. Fig 14: Measuring Body Height Courtesy of MERCEDES-BENZ OF NORTH AMERICA. Example: = 1.79 mm Measure the difference in measuring body height "B1" and drive pinion height with magnetic disk "B" : = +0.06 mm Read off basic deviation "a" on drive pinion: = - Subtotal = 1.85 mm Measure the difference "A1" between the adjusted gauge dimension and end face of the measuring body. = +0.01 mm Negative" direction: = - "Positive" direction: = 1.86 mm Thickness of shim "S": Take measuring device (052) and measuring device rings out of the rear axle housing Detach measuring body (051b). Insert the shim with the calculated shim thickness "S" into the rear axle housing. Only hardened shims may be used. Shims are available in various thicknesses (see Parts microfiche). If necessary, grind the shim off accordingly. Fig 15: Measuring Device And Device Rings Out Of Rear Axle Housing Courtesy of MERCEDES-BENZ OF NORTH AMERICA.
