TSB : Timing Belt: Removal

Details

Remove lower engine covers. Drain cooling system. Remove radiator and cooling fan. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove water pump pulley, spark plugs and distributor cover. Remove fresh air tube from rocker arm cover. Remove A/C compressor drive belt idler bracket. Disconnect coolant inlet hose from thermostat housing. Remove crankshaft pulley retaining bolt. Using puller, remove crankshaft pulley. Remove front upper and lower timing belt covers. See Fig 1 . Fig 1: Exploded View of Timing Belt & Components Courtesy of NISSAN MOTOR CO., U.S.A. Temporarily install crankshaft pulley retaining bolt. Use crankshaft pulley retaining bolt to rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke and all timing marks are aligned. See Fig 2 . NOTE: No. 1 cylinder is front cylinder on left when viewed from front of engine. See Figure . Fig 2: Aligning Timing Marks Courtesy of NISSAN MOTOR CO., U.S.A. Loosen timing belt tensioner retaining nut. Rotate timing belt tensioner to release timing belt tension. Remove timing belt. CAUTION: DO NOT rotate crankshaft or camshafts with timing belt removed or engine damage may result. Remove camshaft sprockets, crankshaft sprocket and rear timing belt cover (if necessary). See Fig 1 . CAUTION: Note location and direction of camshaft sprocket installation as camshaft sprockets are different. Identification mark is "R3" on right camshaft sprocket and "L3" on left camshaft sprocket. Identification mark is located near timing mark on front of camshaft sprocket. See Fig 2 .
