17 01 00 Cooling Systems March 2000 SUBJECT Coolant Return Hose Rubbing MODEL E38 with M62 engine produced from 9/98 - 3/99 E39 with M62 engine produced from 9/98 - 3/99 PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS. SITUATION The lower radiator coolant return hose may come in contact with the secondary air system check valve flange gasket when the engine coolant is at operating temperature due to coolant system pressure and expansion of the hose. AFFECTED VEHICLES This Service Action involves E38 and E39 vehicles with M62 engines which were produced from 9/98 - 3/99. In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action. The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. CORRECTION File off the protruding portion of the secondary air system check valve flange gasket and install a protective sleeve part number 11 53 7 505 832 on the hose in the contact area. If the inner fabric webbing of the hose is already visible in the contact area, the coolant hose must be replaced with a new hose part number 11 53 7 503 725 which includes a protective sleeve. PROCEDURE 1. Remove the upper section or the air filter housing. (See repair manual group 13, section 13 71 000.) 2. Visually inspect the lower radiator coolant return hose for signs of contact with the secondary air system check valve flange gasket. (Arrow shows contact area) 3. File off the protruding gasket edge. Note: Cover up drive belts and pulleys using a clean shop rag before filing to prevent metal filings from falling on them. 4. If the inner fabric webbing of the hose is not visible in the contact area install a protective sleeve part number 11 53 7 505 832 on the hose in the contact area. Note: The protective sleeve should be installed with the rubber ribbing facing the hose in the contact area. (Arrow shows the installation location of the protective sleeve) 5. If the inner fabric webbing of the hose is already visible in the contact area, the coolant return hose must be replaced with a new hose part number 11 53 7 503 725 which includes a protective sleeve. Note: The coolant should be drained in a clean drain pan and reused after the repair is completed. Bleed the coolant system as outlined in the repair manual group 17, section 17 00 039 after the hose replacement. PARTS INFORMATION LABEL INSTRUCTIONS This Service Action has been assigned code number 266. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-130) and: a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1); b. punch out code number 266 printed on the label and, c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown. If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
